J-Crew
In 2004, we started another very unique and successful program dubbed the J-Crew (the boys named it). The J-Crew began as an after school mentoring/tutoring program that partnered referred at-risk 7th and 8th graders from our neighboring public school with a group of our older Joshua Group kids, spending their time together working on at-risk youth prevention skills, homework assignments and recreational activities.
The J Crew program has expanded and developed into an intensive and comprehensive In-school and After-school tutoring/mentoring program. Every week, Monday-Thursday, approximately 150 young people participate in J Crew, Joshua Group's academically driven After-school program. Additionally, Joshua Group tutors provide academic support for J Crew students through In-school tutoring programs in four city schools.
Program Successes
- 98% of Joshua Youth were promoted to next grade
- 95% of public school students demonstrated reduced absenteeism
- Our J Crew 8th graders from Rowland earned the majority of the year end academic awards
- 87% of private high school students achieved better than a 2.5 GPA
